Portrait by J.hunsung in South Korea

It isn’t with every piece that I feature here on the gallery that we can actually watch the artist paint … but in this case, we can. I’ve posted the video of J.hunsung painting this beautiful portrait in the videos section on the gallery. Be sure to take the time to take a look.

Watching the artist’s process is fascinating. With watercolors it is typical to start light and finish dark – but J.hunsung starts with an almost black pigment to begin. Choose to work on various areas of the painting. I don’t see any notes for how long this piece took, but the video shows that J.hunsung changed clothes a few times during the course of the work.

Commenting on the final piece; I would love to see this in person. I’d bet the detail jumps off the page. Sometimes hyperreal works don’t strike me – but J.hunsung strikes a good balance with their style. It is still clearly watercolor (which I love) but also has very sharp areas. The style draws you into the subject’s eyes. Great work all around.
