Snow Birds by Joy Makon in Brooklyn, NY

Snow Birds by Joy Makon in Brooklyn, NY.

Makon’s work is deceivingly simple. Most of her paintings look like the result of her shooting photographs using her phone while walking around throughout her day. But, be careful not to miss the subtle greatness that lies therein.

For example, in the piece featured here — Snow Birds — look at the shadow of each goose, each footstep impression, each tree and grass stem. Notice the snow on the trees in the foreground as well as the background, and how every goose has that signature white patch on their face.

This is excellent work. Makon’s love of light shines in her work. As she puts it, on her about page:

This collection of paintings is the result of closely studying light, color, reflections, shadows and bringing them to life on paper. I paint what I see, by direct observation or through photographs that I take.
