Góndolas en Venecia (Gondolas in Venice) by Josep Ayneto in Maresme, Barcelona, Spain.

My deepest thanks to the artist’s son, Xavier Ayneto, for submitting his father’s work. I hadn’t seen it before but I’m very glad to have taken the time over the last few days to get acquainted with his work.

Often times the most interesting part of a painting is where the artist decided not to put any paint. Much of the structure and foundation of Ayneto’s paintings seem to come from their whitespace. The buildings and people are given weight and depth without a drop of paint.

Ayneto’s paintings can seem very simple when examined closely. But is when you back up and appreciate the entire painting that you begin to see their real genius.
