Lee by Julia Bacellar (AKA Bax) in Paris, France.
Many different styles come to mind as I look at this piece by Bax but the one thing that I seem to continue to focus on is the cheating. Bax’ decisions to move away from reality in certain areas of the painting are decisions I would probably never be able to make. Which is probably why I’ll never be a great artist.
One example of where Bax cheats in this piece is under the hat. The light on the hair behind the ear would more than likely never make it there but for this piece it works. In fact I couldn’t imagine it being any other way.
This is what separates good artists from great artists; being able to throw out all the rules for the betterment of the piece. Bax has done just that with this painting.
