Gilbert Whitney & Co. by Don Gore in Missouri.
I love Gore’s work. It has a certain symmetry to it that reminds me of some of the very best urban photography. Close inspection of this piece reveals how truly great Gore is with grays and blacks.
For instance, the very, very dark spot on the street. That is the same color as the store’s signage. It is also used to create the shadow of the stop sign, trash bin, and flower box along the sidewalk. Also the outer foyer of the entryway for the store is filled with shadow. This piece could have easily been too dark with all of this black used but yet I would describe it as a very light and vibrant piece. This balance isn’t easily met.
Oh, and that color red!
