Gypsy by Brandon D. Hunt in Atlanta, Georgia.

This piece by Hunt is extremely impressive. At first glance it is, quite simply, one of the better paintings ever added to the gallery since the very beginning. It knocks on realisms door while leaving just enough rough edges to allow the eye and mind to fill in the gaps.

Upon closer scrutiny you can begin to breakdown how Hunt managed to make the drapes (or, perhaps bed sheets?) appear so real, heavy and just plain great. A lot of times when an artist tries to put too much detail into their work they can ruin it. I’ve definitely made this mistake. Hunt didn’t. He added only what was needed to achieve the look he wanted.

The woman, her expression, her dress, the lighting, the shadows – I’m not sure I have the time or the words to describe just how very well done this is.
