Woody Allen by Emma McDonnell in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

McDonnell is majoring in Illustration at the Art Institute of Boston and it shows. As you all know I’m working hard on my portraiture and to say that McDonnell’s Woody Allen piece is inspiration is an understatement.

I’m always so anal about details and I find it so hard to just let go and do something simple. This piece by McDonnell, although probably not simple, is simple in its style. Clean lines, only a few bits of detail, and some bright colors. You’ve got to stare at it for at least a minute before you see the subtle details like the red spots, the mouth changing from red to blue, and the two different color eyebrows.

I hope this goes up in her store.

Hat tip Emma, well done.

Reblogged from iamthearm which is McDonnell’s Tumblr. You can also find her on Blogspot, Flickr, and she has a store.

Oh, and she’s also on the Twitter at @ekmcdonnell which I’ve added to the ever-growing list of artists I maintain at @h2ocolor/artists. Don’t forget to follow @h2ocolor too!
