Sometimes you just need to have a little fun with watercolor. And while I don’t want to take anything away from the obvious hard work that Cowles put into this portrait – I can tell by the brushstrokes that she was having a little fun while doing it.
How can I see this? Well, follow me around the painting. See the shoulder drip? The few splotches here and there, the obviously quick strokes to create the hair? Time and attention in the face and eye gave way to speed and fun once the rest of the painting was to be done. And that balance – of detail and fun – always pays off. And it did here.
